Trois grandes banques américaines viennent de voir leur note abaissée à « négative » par Moody’s.

Selon MarketWatch, Moody’s Investor Service a rétrogradé les notes de JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo et Bank of America de « stable » à « négative ». Peter E. Nerby, analyste chez Moody’s, a expliqué que cette détérioration des perspectives pour la dette bancaire était due à une « capacité potentiellement affaiblie du gouvernement des États-Unis d’Amérique (Aaa négatif) à soutenir les banques systémiquement importantes du pays ».

La dégradation de JPMorgan est en partie attribuée au fait que la banque gère une activité de marchés de capitaux « complexe », présentant des risques « considérables » pour ses créanciers. Moody’s indique qu’une éventuelle amélioration de la note de JPMorgan dépendrait de la capacité de la banque à maintenir des performances et des niveaux de capital « forts et stables », supérieurs à ceux de ses concurrents.

Malgré cette baisse de note par Moody’s, les actions des trois banques sont en hausse pour le mois de novembre jusqu’à présent.

L’agence a également souligné que la dégradation des notes de ces banques était conforme à la baisse précédente de la note de crédit souverain des États-Unis, également passée de « stable » à « négative ».

Dans une note de recherche publiée le trimestre dernier, Moody’s a mentionné que les banques américaines étaient confrontées à un « risque significatif » de fuite de dépôts en raison des risques liés aux taux d’intérêt et à la gestion actif-passif (ALM).

Moody’s, qui contrôle 80 % de l’industrie mondiale des notations avec Standard & Poor’s (S&P), prévoit une récession pour l’économie américaine au début de l’année prochaine.

« L’agence continue de s’attendre à une récession légère au début de 2024, et compte tenu des tensions de financement dans le secteur bancaire américain, il est probable que les conditions de crédit se resserrent et que les pertes sur prêts augmentent pour les banques américaines. »
