Lors d’une interview, le président américain élu a affirmé qu’il « mettra immédiatement fin à l’invasion des migrants en Amérique ». 

Donald Trump a fait savoir qu’il souhaitait mettre fin au droit du sol dans le pays « dès le premier jour de son mandat ». Fustigeant la facilité pour les étrangers d’obtenir la nationalité américaine une fois arrivés sur le sol, Donald Trump a expliqué que si « quelqu’un pose un pied, juste un pied […] sur notre territoire, [il est] désormais citoyen des États-Unis ». Puis de poursuivre : « Nous allons y mettre fin parce que c’est ridicule »
